Few weeks back I've managed to finish reading an interesting tale: Paladin of Souls by Lois McMaster Bujold (LMB).

First I'd like to say that I'm more of a Sci-Fi fan than a Fantasy one. That out of the way, I got this book because I was looking for books with Nebula or Hugo awards (..I was fascinated by all the books I've read since Neuromancer)

Then LMB popped out on Amazon adn when I saw the description, I said to myself: "this looks interesting"... This book is part of a series and it's not even the first one of that series.

The book is almost a historical book, mystical in places, and it's very easy to get a grip of every character in it. It's very well written:

  • the characters have their own lives and destinies
  • there are some interesting turns
  • it gradually introduces everyone in the story

The book seems to be on the trend which is the most popular these days: visual books. In other words, books which, when you read them, you can fairly easy see their "movie" in your head. Something like Harry Potter (or The Lord of the Rings).

On another hand, it seemed a bit less complex (or "dense" should I say) than LotR. However, I can see why LMB gets praised for her work.

From my perspective, I'd give it a 8/10 (but then again, I have to read all the series to be more accurate.

In my list, It's one of the books I'd recommend...

HTH,
